February 23 saw the sale of one of philately's gem, a United States/Canada mixed franking 1851 cover from Montreal to New York.
It realises US$525,000 against the pre-sale estimate of US$400,000 to 500,000. The only United States/Canada mixed franking with both stamps cancelled in Canada, this highly celebrated cover, with its extraordinary combination of first issues (and ranking among the most important covers in philately) is without question one of the five greatest 1847 usages. |
