Norway's first stamp, in a block of 39, discovered in 1929 was sold on October 13, 2001 by Skanfil AS in Oslo. It was originally issued in panes of 50.
It fetched 3,800,000 Norwegian Kroner (US$434,489), which is 216% over its pre-sale estimate of 1,800,000 Norwegian Kroner (US$205,811). This 1855 4-skiling blue multiple is Norway's most vluable philatelic item.
The block was auctioned by Harmers of London in 1933 and was again auctioned in 1942 by the Mercury Stamp Co., New York to the Rothschild family. It reappeared in 1981 to be sold by Phillips Auctioneers in London for £105,000 to Pieter Ahl, a Swedish clothing magnate. He formed a grand-prix collection with it. |
