This quadruple rate cover shows 2 copies of the USA 10c Black (paying the portion of the rate form the US border to New York). Each stamp with a neat manuscript 'X', on cover from Kingston, V.C., dated May 17 1851 to New York and with the red 'Canada' arc and 'Paid-20'. The cover also shows the Canadian domestic rating of '1/-'(in red to denote prepayment).
This is the only recorded multiple rate of the 3 recorded covers used from Canada during the period that each countries stamps could prepay only their own rate - April 6-June 30, 1851. This cover was sold on 28 June 2001 in Charles G. Firby auction for a hammer price at US$15,000. |
