This half burnt postcard showing the Zeppelin over Rio de Janeiro was sold by Corinphila Auktionen on May 19 for an astounding sFR85,000 (US$48,000) against a pre-sale estimate of sFR17,500 (US$9,866).
This picture postcard was one of many retrieved from the historic crash of the Hindenburg crash at Lakehurst, USA on 6 May 1937. It bears two airmail German Reich stamps, a third destroyed by fire, cancelled by a large c.d.s. that was used on board the Hindenburg. It also shows the black US-Killer "New York N.Y.MAY 10. Paquebot".
This postcard was described by Corinphila as "a key piece in Zeppelin philately for the advanced collector". |
